Roots-Dance-Poetry

This is the continuation of the Dance-Text-Origin piece. After Marie (the choreographer from NSCD) asked me to compose for her major project. We have decided to take the piece further and involve poetry instead of using improvised text, so that it will prove to be even in all artistic levels. Researches were done during Christmas break. Each came with the material related to our countries as well as communication.
I found a poem by Wislawa Szymborska – "Trzy slowa najdziwniejsze". Marie found old Norwegian (Viking) poetry. We have used all that as a starting point of composition.

I have also brought cassette with vinyl recorded that I found in music library in my home city (WiMBP Rzeszow). Record that I used was: Witold Szczurek – The Spark. It provided me with natural saturated sound as well as vinyl crackling and noise. The sound was well processed with Jomox T-Resonator as well.
We decided on looking into folk music from the countries of our origin, nomad folk music and music created by composers from my region – Podkarpacie in Poland. However it’s worth to mantion that the piece sound nothing like it :)

Radek Rudnicki - Roots-Dance-Poetry

I have also recorded Anna Edgington singing mentioned poem as well as Maggie whispering it in both Polish and English. (I found translation in English as well).

Vibraphone folk tunes and improvisation was performed by Enrico Bertelli I used it along with Matt Postle’s trumpet improv. I carefully edited the material afterwards. Polish male voice used in the piece is my mate Arek aka ArekATematRzeka he improvised poetry and did freestyle MCing to electronic loops, which I edited after.

As for dance Marie used 4 dancers this time aiming for diverse, narrative and therefore more interesting choreography.

I started with processing each of the recordings using Jomox T-Resonator. It provided feedback sound used on vibes as well as the trumpet. I tried to create the groove based on Anna’s vocal recording. This all was achieved thanks to careful edition as well as different settings of delay effects (T-Resonator as well).
