Kitchenware Project 1
Improvised, ruled by the open structure piece made by Enrico Bertelli and myself. All sounds used are coming from the kitchen. We used metal and ceramic bowls, trays, Pringles boxes as well as beer cans. Enrico was playing those instead of multi percussion. However the kit was organised in the similar way (pizza pan being a cymbal, table being a brush etc). Pre-recorded loops were used in some extend to provide more diverse sounds especially in lower part of frequency spectrum. I live sampled Enrico’s improvisation during the performance in Ableton Live.
As for the processing I used analogue filter as well as Live’s Beat repeats and delays. Max patch provided me with the control over Live with the gamepad so I could take control over mouse (easier channel switching in Live) as well as standard MIDI mapping.
The piece has three parts. In the first one I gathered the sound material and improvised with it in rather free fashion, however responded to what Enrico was doing.
I used lots of short loops and changed them frequently. The piece gradually grew for about 4min.
Half way through the performance we made theatrical interval were I played Battery patch with the MIDI keyboard and Enrico was pretending to play his kit, it added fun and humoristic factor to the piece.
Last part is more energetic, I used loops created with Machinedrum but samples used are coming from Kitchenware. I played steady 4/4 beat towards the end and Enrico was improvising to that.
Once we performed in Rymer Auditorium we had time to film it, prepare scenography and lighting with Angie’s help. Whole performance was made with ‘student accommodation vibe’ in mind.
I opened and closed the performance pretending to play Gameboy ☺
